A large, black capped, crested tern. Similar to Lesser Crested Tern but larger, stockier and has a thick yellow (not orange-yellow) bill. Mantle and wings mostly grey. Non-breeding birds show more white on forecrown and around eye, with fine balck spotting, while black cap starts from behind eye.
