This species* occurs primarily as a passage migrant during the northern winter. In non-breeding plumage, both sexes have a glossy black head with chestnut-brown wings and back. Underparts are usually greyish on the upper breast with a whitish belly. A rare white morph also occurs with a glossy black head and uniformly white plumage. In breeding plumage, males have very long tail streamers.

* Recent geneitc studies have resulted in splitting this species into three: Amur Paradise Flycatcher, Blyth's Paradise Flycatcher, and Indian Paradise Flycatcher.
