A common small slate-grey heron with black crown and long nape plumes. Uppersides tinged greenish, with pale fringes to wing feathers. Throat and upeer breast white, with prominent black moustachial stripe. Underparts pale grey. Facial skin greenish yellow. Bill is black with yellow base to lower mandible. Legs and feet yellowish orange. Juveniles browner.
