Small, strikingly-coloured bittern with contrasting dark back and pale wings. Adult male rich chestnut from face, hindback to lower back, contrasting strongly with buff underparts, shoulder and wing coverts. Female similar but wings entirely chestnut, with bold spotting upperparts and wings. Both sexes crown black. Young birds are heavily spotted on upperparts, and boldly streaked on underparts.

A small, richly coloured bittern. Male is uniformly cinnamon-brown on the upper parts, while underparts mostly warm buffish. Female is darker brown on upper parts with fine speckling, and heavily streaked on underparts.
