A stocky red-eyed heron with black head, mantle and scapulars, contrasting with mostly pale grey plumage. Bill is black and lores greyish blue. Feet and legs are yellow, becoming reddish during breeding season. Juveniles are brownish overall with white spotting on wings and brown streaking on head and breast
