A small, pale,  red-eyed raptor of open country. Head and underparts mostly white, upperparts and wings pale grey, with prominant black wing coverts. Wings extend beyond tail when perched. In flight, balck undersides of flight feathers diagnostic. Young birds are browner tinged and have a buff patch on breast.
