Purple Heron

A large heron with chestnut-brown neck, two black lines running down the side of the neck. Black cap, with nape plumes. Upperparts mostly grey, with maroon belly and flanks. In flight, maroon underwings differentiate it from other herons. Young birds are light brown and lack the neck markings of adults.

Javan Pond Heron

A small, stocky and short-necked heron. Non-breeding birds, which are most often seen, are streaked brown on head, neck and breast, with brown upperparts and white wings, and are almost impossible to tell apart from non-breeding Javan adn Indian Pond Herons. Early-arriving or late-departing birds maybe in diagnostic breeding plumages, chestnut-maroon on head, neck and breast.

Non-breeding Pond Herons are nearly impossible to tell apart from Chinese, Javan and Indian Pond Herons.

Malayan Night Heron

A medium size, short necked, rufous Heron with contrasting black crown and crest. Bill black, facial skin greenish blue, legs and feet green. Juvenile is duller with irregular buffish and greyish barring and vermiculations througout plumage, while throat is pale buffy with dark mesial streak.
